A graduate student instructor once told me that vibrant orange doesn’t occur naturally in nature. As I tried to think of something bright orange at the time, I couldn’t. And so, imagine my surprise when I spotted this quarter-sized lichen, the color of bright orange, while working as an environmental scientist on the coast of Alaska.

I was in awe of its incredible beauty as it stood out on a gravelly ancient sandbar and coastal floodplain. The little spot of orange drew me like a magnet.

Although rare, vibrant orange does naturally occur in nature, and the graduate student was perhaps making a hyperbole.
